The ghosts don't know as much history as the Castle Roogna ghosts, but they're more coherent. Are we going to get zombies too? I've never gone so long without seeing any zombies! Lacuna and Hiatus let me play with their zombie moat monster with them, but I never play with the zombie dragons so Stanley won't get jealous.

He's already a very pretty green!! He's the best dragon! He has six legs, vestigial wings that can even almost fly, and he's a steamer! Oh, and he's the Gap Dragon, that's very important in Xanth.

Xanth has lots of dragons. Fire dragons, water dragons, land dragons, air dragons, I'd have to ask the Good Magician how many, but they like to eat virgins. [ 8| ] In the past, a bunch were sacrificed to dragons who rescued them and decided they should be saved from their abusive villages instead, and there's a famous story of a human and dragon that ran away to the Isle of View to be unicorns instead! Isn't that sweet? [ 8| ]

So tell me all about your favorite ghosts, zombies, and dragons! And if your realm doesn't have any of those -- that's really sad, and I feel bad for you, but you can tell me your favorite story about a couple that proved true love is stronger than even a dragon's jaws! And dragon jaws are really strong. Stanley chomps rocks and swords!

I don't think Alderaan has any dragons. But some planets in my galaxy do! I know because I saw a kryat dragon skull in a museum one time. It was huge!

[She spread her arms wide to emphasize it's hugeness.]

Yeah! Dragons get really big! Stanley would have been that big, but he was shrunk by my Knight in Shiny Armor when we first met, and turned back to my age! And I was only 3. His mate Stella was pretty annoyed, but she took over the Gap Chasm until he could get big again!

What's Alderaan like?

Yeah, I bet I'd be annoyed too if somebody did that. But what'd he shrink him for?

And Alderaan is really nice! It's peaceful and beautiful and lots of people like to come there for vacations. Plus we have thrantas! They're flying animals with big, wide wings that people can ride on. I've had thranta-riding lessons since I could barely walk, and my teacher says I'm almost ready to do it without him in the air with me! I can already handle the thranta by myself, but he has to fly nearby for now, just in case something happens.

His father told him to spray him and the dragon with some fountain of youth, but Hugo couldn't control how much, and overdid it! So his father became a baby too, and so did Stanley!

What's a vacation?

Gee, that sounds neat!! Mother goes flying sometimes on Birds of Paradise plants she grows, but only in an emergency. Usually we ride centaurs instead, except for me, because Stanley's so big so he lets me ride on him!

And a vacation is when you take a trip somewhere just for fun, usually for at least a couple of days. Or sometimes when you just take a break from work for about as long to relax; I think it can mean both things.

Hm. All right. I'll tell you about the greatest dragon of all, the Blue Eyes White Dragon.

She's a majestic creature of pure power. Her White Lightning can strike down any foe, and unmatched in grace and strength. She was my most trusted ally. I haven't seen anything here that really compares...though I will say that I'm not aware of any virgins ever being sacrificed to her.

[ He doesn't mention that 'she' is a pile of three trading cards. She's real in his heart, okay. And maybe was real once upon a time in Egypt. ]

[Ivy is temporarily skeptical that any dragon can ever be better than Stanley, but white lightning is pretty great!]

Gee, that's great! I know the Cyclops Brontes was pretty scared of being struck by lightning from his Dad, but I don't know of any lightning dragons! They say King Fracto Cumulo Nimbus used to just be a regular demon but then he spent too long discorporeal and now he can't turn solid anymore. I bet a dragon could beat his gaseous head!!

[Richie's trying to make some sense of the pamphlet about magic when this comes over his mirror and nearly scares him out of his chair, because he really wasn't expecting it to just turn on. it looked like a phone, and usually phones let you decide if you want to take the transmission or not. no such luck here. he stares at the small girl as she rambles on about dragons and virgins and unicorns ... and then he remembers a conversation he had with Eleanor at the party]

Hi, Ivy. I'm Richie, and I've never seen a real dragon. But my friends and I ... we used to pretend they were real. And all kinds of other monsters, too. We made a game out of it.

Because it was fun, and we were bored out of our heads, and there was nothing good on TV. I mean - we were kids, we couldn't really do much else on rainy days.

... Besides, sometimes we needed to pretend we were other people, for a while. Sometimes it was just more fun to think we were heroes. That we were important. Not just four dumb kids kicking around a tiny town in Maine that most of the world hadn't even heard of.

But Dragons ARE real? So why did you have to pretend? Or do you just mean you pretended to fight fake ones?

TV is a magic box that shows you things - like, uhhh ... [he dug deep into his memory for fantasy stuff, the kind of stuff Bill used to weave into his settings and all those stories he told with so much ease that you really could believe they were real for a few hours] .... Like a crystal ball. Only with more than one thing to look at, so if you didn't like what it showed you, you could find something better. Some of the stuff was real, and some of it was just other people pretending.

Maine's the name of a piece of my world. We just called the whole thing "Earth", which is really boring, but most people from it are boring, so. There you go. And dragons aren't real on Earth, so we pretended to fight fake ones.

I grew up with ghosts and zombies, and restored Threnody and Jordan the Barbarian back to life! But then they had to leave Castle Roogna, because Threnody was still cursed.

Mm!! I love monsters!! Not just Stanley, and other dragons, but Chex said her family with the centaurs didn't want to acknowledge her as one of them, but the winged monsters all did!! And Volney's really cuddly and sweet!! And he said even the wiggles aren't normally dangerous, and he met with their Queen who's going to help!!! It's very romantic! And ogres don't want to be beautiful, they're proud of their ugliness, they can even curl water! But I love them too! Smash Ogre taught me lots about the forest, and his son Esk is going to save the Kiss-Me River!

[Missy chuckles, raising an eyebrow. It's something, it really is. This girl is prattling on like an idiot about things that very well could be entirely made up and, somehow, Missy doesn't want to hurl her into the nearest black hole.]
