Hello! Yes, sorry, false alarm - I think, jury's still out, actually. The bloke who's broken in is... [He twists his face into as derisively confused a look as he can] My room mate? Apparently?? [A small shrug and a shake of the head, still wearing that expression, like he feels he's definitely owed an explanation and someone's committed a massive oversight by not keeping him informed]

Anyway, problem: Malcolm is missing. Said burglar claims to be him with no memory of this place, so. [He doesn't bother explaining that if the adult Malcolm is telling the truth, this clearly means they're two different versions of the same person from alternate timelines, thinking it obvious] Be on the lookout, and if anyone knows anything, do please keep me filled in, yes?

...yes, that's...what I was implying, yes. Multiverse theory. Theories. There are multiple parallel universe theories. You almost can't avoid having some version of a multiverse if you push deeply enough into the mathematical descriptions of the physical universe. String theory, for example, posits that the universe exists in terms of tiny strings that vibrate in 10 or 11 dimensions and allows for the existence of multiple membranes - universes. Or there's the prediction of cosmic inflation, which allows for infinite Hubble volumes, and therefore infinite versions of everyone and everything, all within good old three dimensional space. Or there's the many-worlds interpretation, which is almost more like infinite timelines than infinite universes, but allows individual universes to exist on quantum branches within infinite-dimensional Hilbert space.

There's...you know, sorry, there's a lot. And since there's living, breathing proof of a multiverse already - two, actually - it doesn't seem outlandish to presume that, while they could both be Malcolm, they could be two of an infinite number of Malcolms.

And he's not my friend.

Yes, I am aware of Multiple planes of existence and differing and converging timelines, but I am not a scholar by any means... If I want to travel to another shard, I can just teleport there, given the existence of a suitable anchor.

But something tells me that isn't the same as what you're implying-
