[Leia appears on the network on the afternoon of the 29th, looking very excited about something.]

Everybody! Guess what? I got taller!

[She points the mirror down at her ankles, so everyone can see that the pants she's wearing are a couple centimetres too short.]

See? these are the pants I was wearing when I got here. They fit just right then, but now they're too short. So that means I grew!

[And clearly she felt the need to share this earth-shaking news with everyone.

Thanks! This is the first time I really noticed it.

Well, except for that time I got turned into a giant, but that doesn't really count.

What purpose could that have possibly served?

I don't know. A lot of weird magical things happened to people that day, though, so it wasn't just me. It only lasted for that one day though.

Are you saying these kind of things can happen at random?

[princess_weia]

Sometimes? There was one time we all had music following us around. That one was kinda fun, actually. The time where saying someone's name would make them stick to you wasn't so fun though.

Usually it's all the same sort of thing though, like it is now. The time I got turned into a giant was weird because everybody had something different happen to them.

I don't know if either of those situations sound terribly fun to me.

With all of these strange things happening, it is a wonder anyone can get anything done at all.

They don't happen all the time. Just every few months or so usually. Well, the moon doing stuff to Monster class people happens more often than that, but that's just an affect of their class, not a sudden, weird thing like what I mentioned.

I would still like to know why that happens specifically to monsters at all. Seems very unnecessary, and no other class seems to have that drawback.

I'm not sure. Alderaan doesn't have any moons, so I don't know a whole lot about moon phases and things. There might be stuff written about it in the library, though.

Trust me, I shall be consulting whatever the library can offer.

I can't understand why the moon would do strange things to us to begin with.

[Leia shrugs.]

Magic, I guess. A lot of stuff about how magic works doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, and that's one of the things that's the weirdest.

[weaver_of_lies]

It is said the moon carries magic of its own, certainly, and plays a part in the world it embodies, but why it would only affect some and not others is something I'll have to look into.

Personally, it seems to stack the deck against anyone who is a monster.

[princess_weia]

[Leia considers that.]

I dunno. From what I understand, monsters are extra strong during the full moon, even if they have weird stuff happen to them. So maybe the weird stuff is just kind of a side-effect?

I appreciate the strength booth minus the "weird stuff." It's far more effective to have that power and channel it properly without a stumbling block, don't you think?

Maybe, but that doesn't seem to be how things work here. It seems like every class and kind of magic has good things about it and bad things about it, so everything kind of balances out.

When you get more sparks and get stronger, things get easier, but it takes a lot of work and practice. Which is probably a good thing with magic I think, even if it makes things harder and less fun.

It is a different way than how I learned it. For one thing, one had the ability to see where they excelled and, having proven their competence, continued study in that specific area while getting rudimentary understanding of other classes of magic. For one thing, there is entirely something suspicious about the idea of someone you never met determining what sort of class you belong to.

Hard work is not unknow in my circle. Unnecessary work, on the other hand, can be quite tedious.

[Leia shrugs.]

I think a lot of the lessons I have back home are unnecessary, but I still have to do them anyway. Yeah, they're boring, but everybody says they're important. I guess here the same is true for grown-ups.

And the rest of it... I think it's because coming through the mirror changes us somehow, and Merlin can tell how we all got changed. So then it'd be more the mirror that picks what class we are. I don't know how it would pick that though.

It... is different when you have a way you had to learn and you accept all of the trappings of those ways, only to have to learn all of it again in a different way. For some of us, the scars of our instruction never go away, so to have to relearn it all is frustrating, to say the least.

I would very much like to know the way we are selected. Even knowing that Merlin can tell, how precisely does he know?

[Leia nods.]

Yeah, learning things here is a lot different than lessons back home. But I actually like this kind of learning better; it's more interesting and more fun to go out and find stuff out on your own and practice doing real stuff than it is to sit around while a droid or a tutor teaches you stuff.

And I guess Merlin can tell because of his magic, though I don't know if that's a special thing only he can really do, or if it's something other people can learn too.

You have to find and do "stuff" as well, Princess. The teacher are your guide to making sure that you do not go too off book: there are, after all, consequences for venturing into things without the proper protection. Magic is fun, but by no means should it simply be reduced to whimsy: there are many elements to it.

That fool Hades seems to be able to tell as well. Perhaps their magic originated in this world.

Yeah, I know you have to be careful. The first time I used my Flying magic I messed up and used way too much by accident. I lost my memory for awhile and Michael had to call off the mission we were on so he could bring me back to Main Street til my memory came back. That's why I worked so hard on it after that; I didn't want to mess up like that again.

Probably. Though I don't know if the mind of magic that let's someone tell Classes would really be good for much other places anyway.

I've been trying to be cautious there myself. Missy has actually helped to remind me not to overexert myself. Like you I may wind up doing that anyway: the peril of overexerting myself.

[Which she's done more than once].

It would be more useful if they were actually attempting to instruct us properly.

Yeah, sometimes it's hard not too, 'specially if you're in trouble. That's how I messed up; we were in trouble and I was scared so my magic just kind of reacted and made a big whirlwind. It saved us, but it wrecked a lot of stuff nearby too.

And they did teach us at first. Mr. Dreamfinder taught me when I first got here. But now that there's a lot of Apprentices who can help they don't need to as much.

Unfocused magic can lead to a lot of trouble like that, believe me, I know. Even magic in the most controlled circumstances can backfire if the proper precautions are not taken.

Is that right? Then what is it that Dreamfinder and the others do, now that they have all of this newfound time, I wonder?
